There’s a science to staying healthy as you age. As your body changes, so do the requirements for diet and exercise. Good nutrition and fitness can play an increasingly important role in how well you age. Low-salt, low-fat diets with plenty of fruits, vegetables and fiber can reduce your age-related risks of heart disease, diabetes, stroke, osteoporosis an other chronic diseases. Exercise has similar effects, and also increases the overall quality of life, making you feel better and enjoy life more.

Do you have belly fat?

Types of Exercise

There are four types of exercise to help us stay fit as we age: endurance, muscular, balance and stretching. Endurance activities should be at least 30 minutes of activity most days of the week that make you breathe harder. Muscular activities are those that engage your muscles, which help you stay strong and healthy. Do things to help your balance, like standing on one foot, then the other, or walking heel-to-toe. Stretching helps keep you flexible so you can move more freely. Combining activities like yoga, walking, and some light-weight lifting can help you stay fit.

Eating Properly

As we age, our daily energy needs slow decrease so we need fewer calories. Natural hormone changes also change how our bodies process and store fat. Eating a healthy, balanced diet which limits the intake of saturated fat, along with increasing exercise can help you stay at a healthy weight.

Live Longer & Better

When you’re good to your body, it will work with you to keep you happy and healthy for a longer and better life.

July 16, 2015

Isansys Lifecare recently announced the world’s first commercially available, wireless cardiac monitor which can provide low cost continuous ECG heart monitoring. This device will allow cardiac patients to be continuously monitored so that when a problem is detected, it will usually be easier to treat, avoiding life-threatening and costly emergency room trips.

Most of the costly elements of the monitor have been made to be recyclable to reduce costs. The device resembles a lightweight bandage strip which adheres to a patient’s body and analyzes the ECG signal of every heartbeat and can detect problems quickly.

Because 1 in 3 cardiac patients who are released from intensive care suffer some type of relapse after discharge, there is a need for this type of device to save lives and lower costs.

July 17, 2015

What makes us different is our ability to integrate the best of conventional western medicine practices with the often overlooked, yet medically proven non-traditional practices, such as yoga, meditation, and realistic dietary recommendations. We recognize that what is often ignored are simple fixes such as dietary and lifestyle practices that are medically proven to be more effective than the medications and procedures that traditional medicine dictates.

A Balanced Approach

HHV takes a balanced and realistic approach to your health care. We recognize that traditional treatments that include the usual medications and procedures are necessary. We also recognize that not everyone has the same goals. Some people want to do everything possible to eliminate, reduce or avoid medications and procedures and will invest their time and energy in pursuit of that goal. Others are less willing to make that sort of commitment and will require more medications. We work with everybody and do not judge. Everyone is different in how they want to live their lives.

Education to Make Informed Decisions

There is a lot to learn and much of the subject matter is not easy. At HHV we educate our patients so they understand their options as well as their treatment plan. We want to make our patients experts of their own health so that they don’t become unnerved every time there is another new fad. Our favorite patients are those that scour the Internet and media and challenge us with new information. We are always open to learn and if we discover something better, we will embrace it without hesitation.

How Can We Help?

Ultimately, the goal is to help you live a better life. Please contact us if you are interested in an office consultation at 586.795.3600. We want to help.
