<p class="has-medium-font-size">As Americans, we eat a lot of sugar. On average we consume about 300 calories worth of added sugar each day. And one in five of us consumes <strong>more than a cup</strong> of the stuff during that same timespan.<br><br>And, don’t get me wrong. I’m not casting judgment on anyone here.</p>

<p>I know, it can be hard to avoid.</p>

<p>Because we don&#8217;t just get massive amounts of sugar from stuff we’d usually think of as sweet treats—cookies, soda, cake, candy.</p>

<p>Thanks to the misguided research of the 1970s where fat was demonized in the public eye, once that was removed from foods, big food companies still had to make their stuff taste good, or no one would buy it.</p>

<p>So, they took out the fat and packed in the sugar.<br><br>Which is why sugar is in so many things we wouldn’t think of as sweet. Salad dressings, sauces, yogurt, soups… These and more all have tons of added sugar.<br><br>So, we need to eat less of it. Giving it up can be tough, of course. If you’re among the<a href="https://www.heart.org/HEARTORG/GettingHealthy/NutritionCenter/HealthyEating/Added-Sugars_UCM_305858_Article.jsp"> 20% of the population </a>who are mainlining a cup of the stuff each day, you’re going to go through a withdrawal period to rival kicking hard drugs. And even if you don’t eat a ton, you still might feel lousy for a few days.<br><br>But here’s the good news. Once you kick it, here are five things to expect to have back in your life.</p>

<div class="wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile"><div class="wp-block-media-text__content">
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">You’ll Need Some New Clothes</h3>

<p>The quickest way to lose weight is to stop drinking pop—which is just an incredibly efficient sugar-delivery method.<br><br>It’s going to be different for everyone and will depend on a number of factors, but the average weight loss for people who give up sugar tend to lose between <a href="https://www.livestrong.com/article/438782-how-much-weight-can-i-lose-by-cutting-out-sugar-starch-for-two-weeks/">one and three pounds per week</a>.</p>

<p>Your smile will look better. While not exactly health-related (although dental hygiene is a biggy when it comes to overall health) not giving all those plaque-producing bacteria in your mouth the sweetness they crave is going to keep things brighter in there.</p>
</div></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Your Skin Will Look Better</h3>

<p>Sugar tends to cause a lot of inflammation with your body, and it’s common for that inflammation to affect your skin. Cutting out the sugar ends up resulting in clearer skin.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">You Won’t Have to Worry so Much About Losing a Foot</h3>

<p>Type 2 diabetes isn’t something to mess around with. Aside from also the hassle of having to spend a good portion of your life hooked up to a dialysis machine, you also run the chance of suffering some serious health consequences—including amputation of your extremities.</p>

<div class="wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile"><div class="wp-block-media-text__content">
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">You’ll Need Some Shades</h3>

<p>Because your outlook is going to be so much brighter. Inside the sugar trap cycle, your mood is dependent upon the sugar for a boost. After you’re off the stuff, however, your mood evens out, and you’re far more likely to feel great—and feel it consistently.<br><br>Again, that first initial step isn’t going to be a comfortable one. But your health is worth it. And so is your happiness.<br><br>If you decide to embark on the life-changing journey to get out of sugar jail for good, your body will thank you.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">How does sugar compare when it comes to cocaine addiction? You might be shocked&#8230;</p>

<p>A few years back, rats in a lab were hooked up to IVs. Within those IVs was a drip solution that’s been running through the veins of the rats for several weeks. These rats were intentionally<a href="http://www.wbur.org/hereandnow/2015/01/07/sugar-health-research"> hooked on cocaine</a>.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-block-embed-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">
<iframe loading="lazy" title="What Do Cookies and Cocaine Have in Common?" width="720" height="405" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/OdksJeTL0JY?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen></iframe>
</div></figure>

<p><br><br>But that’s not the end of the experiment. The rats were taken off the drip, placed in cages, and then given a choice between two water bottles. One bottle contained the cocaine solution. In the other was filtered water and sugar.<br><br>Which one would you expect the rats to choose?</p>

<div class="wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile"><figure class="wp-block-media-text__media"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="1024" src="https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/What-Cookies-and-Cocaine-Have-in-Common-2-1024x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1496 size-full" srcset="https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/What-Cookies-and-Cocaine-Have-in-Common-2-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/What-Cookies-and-Cocaine-Have-in-Common-2-300x300.jpg 300w, https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/What-Cookies-and-Cocaine-Have-in-Common-2-150x150.jpg 150w, https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/What-Cookies-and-Cocaine-Have-in-Common-2-768x768.jpg 768w, https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/What-Cookies-and-Cocaine-Have-in-Common-2-1536x1536.jpg 1536w, https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/What-Cookies-and-Cocaine-Have-in-Common-2-600x600.jpg 600w, https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/What-Cookies-and-Cocaine-Have-in-Common-2-100x100.jpg 100w, https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/What-Cookies-and-Cocaine-Have-in-Common-2.jpg 1920w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure><div class="wp-block-media-text__content">
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Coke&#8230; or Coke?</h3>

<p>They didn’t just choose the sugar… They did so an incredible <strong>94% of the time</strong>. Which is shocking. Even more shocking? When the sugar was taken away, instead of switching back to the cocaine, the rats chose to go through sugar withdrawal—which, according to Dr. Bartley Hoebel of Princeton University’s Neuroscience Institute is the worst withdrawal he’s witnessed short of straight up heroin sickness.<br><br>It should be noted that sugar addiction isn’t a strictly biological process. It’s not going to happen to everyone who eats the occasional cookie.</p>
</div></div>

<p>But just as with “harder” drugs (those quotations marks show the degree of hesitation I’m showing not to lump sugar into that category as well) there’s a threshold. You have to eat enough sugar to trigger the chemicals in your brain to begin creating those overwhelming feelings.<br><br>Basically, you need to eat A LOT of sugar to get addicted. That’s the good news.<br><br>The bad news? <strong>Americans eat A LOT of suga</strong>r. Upwards of 160 pounds per person per year, in fact.<br><br>And many researchers now believe that a good portion of us are <strong>addicted to sugar.</strong></p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide"/>

<p><a href="https://bit.ly/2fXuWPV" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">Have type 2 diabetes? Did you know it may be reversible? Learn more at our next FREE Wellness Dinner Seminar by clicking here.</a></p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide"/>

<p>Which maybe isn’t too surprising given that our obesity problem is at epidemic levels—or, at least, it’s not a shocking idea when you look at the problem from a safe distance.<br><br>But, it’s also very strange.<br><br>Most people know that cocaine is addictive. And because of that, most people don’t do cocaine. The subject of addiction overall is obviously more nuanced than that, especially when you’re looking at the opioid epidemic and how much of that began, but very few people starting from scratch seek out something that they know is highly addictive.<br><br>But with sugar? <strong>We give it to our kids on their first birthdays</strong> (if not before.) We give it to them in the form of high fructose corn syrup in crackers, waffles, granola bars, apple juice, and even in their gummy vitamins.<br><br>All this despite the medical evidence showing how detrimental sugar is to your health.<br><br>Here’s just a quick rundown of what sugar does to your body.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Your Brain</h4>

<p>Sugar causes a release of dopamine in the brain, which in turn makes you feel great. For a short time, at least. The more sugar you eat, the more the brain needs to trigger the dopamine. Read up on how hard drugs affect the brain, and it’s the same cycle. Just another example of the body’s addiction response.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Your Mood</h4>

<p>Eating a candy bar gives you a sugar high. When it’s removed from the blood, though, you get a sugar crash. Which makes it not so surprising to learn that adults who consume the most sugar are also the most depressed.</p>

<div class="wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile"><div class="wp-block-media-text__content">
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Your Joints</h3>

<p>If you have arthritis, you should probably hide the sugar bowl. Sugar causes inflammation within the body, which is especially problematic for the joints. Sugar drastically increases your chances for rheumatoid arthritis.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Your Skin</h3>

<p><a href="https://bit.ly/2hHxfux">Sugar causes inflammation</a>, and that in turn causes a breakdown in the collagen and elastin, both of which are responsible for keeping your skin young and stretchy. The result? Wrinkles. And a lot of them.</p>
</div><figure class="wp-block-media-text__media"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="1024" src="https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/What-Cookies-and-Cocaine-Have-in-Common-3-1024x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1497 size-full" srcset="https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/What-Cookies-and-Cocaine-Have-in-Common-3-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/What-Cookies-and-Cocaine-Have-in-Common-3-300x300.jpg 300w, https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/What-Cookies-and-Cocaine-Have-in-Common-3-150x150.jpg 150w, https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/What-Cookies-and-Cocaine-Have-in-Common-3-768x768.jpg 768w, https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/What-Cookies-and-Cocaine-Have-in-Common-3-1536x1536.jpg 1536w, https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/What-Cookies-and-Cocaine-Have-in-Common-3-600x600.jpg 600w, https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/What-Cookies-and-Cocaine-Have-in-Common-3-100x100.jpg 100w, https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/What-Cookies-and-Cocaine-Have-in-Common-3.jpg 1920w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Your Liver</h3>

<p>Sugar in the liver can make that organ—your body’s main filtration system—resistant to insulin. Which means a high risk for type 2 diabetes.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Your Heart</h3>

<p>Excess insulin, from excess sugar, in your bloodstream can, over time, cause your arterial walls to thicken. This makes your heart’s job that much harder, and leaves you prone to heart disease.</p>

<div class="wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile"><figure class="wp-block-media-text__media"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="1024" src="https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/What-Cookies-and-Cocaine-Have-in-Common-4-1024x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1498 size-full" srcset="https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/What-Cookies-and-Cocaine-Have-in-Common-4-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/What-Cookies-and-Cocaine-Have-in-Common-4-300x300.jpg 300w, https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/What-Cookies-and-Cocaine-Have-in-Common-4-150x150.jpg 150w, https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/What-Cookies-and-Cocaine-Have-in-Common-4-768x768.jpg 768w, https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/What-Cookies-and-Cocaine-Have-in-Common-4-1536x1536.jpg 1536w, https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/What-Cookies-and-Cocaine-Have-in-Common-4-600x600.jpg 600w, https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/What-Cookies-and-Cocaine-Have-in-Common-4-100x100.jpg 100w, https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/What-Cookies-and-Cocaine-Have-in-Common-4.jpg 1920w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure><div class="wp-block-media-text__content">
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Your Kidneys</h3>

<p>At a point, if the kidneys are overwhelmed by the amount of sugar they need to filter out of your blood and start letting the sugar pass into your urine. This stress leaves them weakened and exposed to damage from diabetes.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Your Belly Fat</h3>

<p>Excess sugar stores as fat in your body. More sugar <a href="https://bit.ly/2x2Qhm5">means more belly fat.</a></p>
</div></div>

<p>And that’s just the start of the damage sugar does to your body. Because if you’ve read any of our other blogs or watched our videos, you’ll know that when one system breaks down, the damage flows out through the system like a rock dropped in a pond. If one system comes under high stress, the other systems work overtime to regain balance, which in turn over-taxes them. Sooner rather than later everything has gone haywire and disease has officially set in.<br><br>Here’s the thing, though. I’m a cardiologist. I know all this information. But I still have a sweet tooth. I still put one raw sugar in my coffee each morning. So, I’m not passing judgment on anyone. It’s tough.<br><br>But I’m working hard to avoid more and more of it as I continue to get older. And I’d encourage you to work on it as well.<br><br>Maybe the first thing, the place to start, is to understand that cocaine and sugar aren’t two different things. They fall into the same category. One just happens to be legal (and federally subsidized). Recognizing that those two things are both horrible for your body—and that your brain treats them very similarly—is the first step in taking back your health.<br><br>So, what can you do to kick the sugar habit?<br><br>Good question. Nicole gives you a full rundown here in her post “<a href="https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/blog/2016/07/19/6-sweet-ways-to-shake-off-sugar">Six Sweet Ways to Shake Off Sugar.</a>”</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-medium"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="300" height="156" src="https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Water-vs-Pop-The-Showdown-1-300x156.png" alt="" class="wp-image-1771" srcset="https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Water-vs-Pop-The-Showdown-1-300x156.png 300w, https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Water-vs-Pop-The-Showdown-1.png 484w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></figure>

<p>Everyone alive these days is probably aware that pop (or soda, if you live outside the Midwest, or Coke, if you live in Atlanta) is bad for you.<br><br>But what your might not know is just HOW bad.<br><br>Because it&#8217;s BAD.<br><br>So, today, we decided dust off the old boxing gloves and put pop to the test against water. We thought about sorting out the categories based on the benefits of each. But then we realized (Spoiler Alert) that one of the competitors has zero benefits to speak of.<br><br>You know who&#8217;s going to win, of course. But sometimes, like some of the early afternoon college football games on Saturdays, it&#8217;s fun to watch one side just torch the other.<br><br>Let&#8217;s get to it:</p>

<div class="wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile" style="grid-template-columns:25% auto"><figure class="wp-block-media-text__media"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="193" height="127" src="https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Water-vs-Pop-The-Showdown-2.png" alt="" class="wp-image-1772 size-full"/></figure><div class="wp-block-media-text__content">
<p><strong>Bizarro Fat Locales</strong><br>People can get fat accumulation in a lot of places. In the belly area, the thighs, arms, etc. That&#8217;s sort of “normal” fat. It&#8217;s not good, but we realize it happens.<br><br>There are other places that fat can accumulate, however, that seem&#8230; well, sort of creepy.<br></p>
</div></div>

<p>Skeletal fat is one of these. It&#8217;s basically exactly what it sounds like: Fat starts wrapping around your bones like the pink insulation in your attic.<br><br>Which is gross.<br><br>Another place fat can build up is around the liver. “Fatty liver” might be two of the worst words ever put side by side.<br><br>So, which of our competitors causes this?<br><br>Answer: Pop! Of Course.<br><br>A recent Danish study found that people who drank one non-diet soda per day for six months saw their liver fat bump up 6%, their skeletal fat nearly <em>double</em>, and had a 30% increase in cholesterol.<br><br>That&#8217;s impressive, pop. That&#8217;s a lot of new fat.<br><br>Oh, and guess what? Diet pop makes you fat too.<br><br>A study conducted by University of Texas Health Science Center showed that people who drank one diet pop every day for ten years had their waistlines balloon <strong>70% more than the group that didn&#8217;t drink diet pop</strong>. The diet stuff also apparently causes obesity in mice, most likely because the liver responds to artificial sweeteners in almost the same way that it does to normal sugars—that is, it converts them to fat in order to store them for later.<br><br><a href="http://greatist.com/health/hydration-body-whats-really-happening">Water</a>, by the way, essentially does the opposite. Instead of leaving stuff behind in the body, it flushes the bad stuff out.<br><br>Water wins!</p>

<div class="wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile" style="grid-template-columns:auto 28%"><div class="wp-block-media-text__content">
<p><strong>Cancer</strong><br>Cancer is bad.<br>Which one is linked to cancer?<br>Answer: <a href="https://www.mdanderson.org/newsroom/2015/12/sugar-in-western-diets.html">Pop</a><br>This is going to be a short list full of a lot of bad stuff.<br>Here are some ingredients in pop that have been shown to cause cancer:</p>
</div><figure class="wp-block-media-text__media"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="272" height="304" src="https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Water-vs-Pop-The-Showdown-3.png" alt="" class="wp-image-1774 size-full" srcset="https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Water-vs-Pop-The-Showdown-3.png 272w, https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Water-vs-Pop-The-Showdown-3-268x300.png 268w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 272px) 100vw, 272px" /></figure></div>

<p><strong>Caramel coloring</strong>: Pepsi and Coke aren&#8217;t naturally brown. They become brown when caramel coloring agents —namely, 2-methylimidazole and 4-methylimidazole—are added in. The problem with these two chemicals is that they are <a href="https://www.chemistryworld.com/news/caramel-colour-in-soft-drinks-linked-to-cancer/8320.article">known carcinogens</a>.<br><br><strong>BPA</strong>: Bisphenol A (BPA) is used in pop cans to keep the acids in the pop from eating away at the metal cans. If that weren&#8217;t a problematic enough image, BPA is a pretty good thing to expose yourself to if you&#8217;re looking to <a href="http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/840559">drastically up your chances for reproductive and breast cancers</a>.<br><br><strong>Aspertame:</strong> Diet pop contains aspertame. Aspertame causes cancer. Therefore, Diet pop causes<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2006/02/12/business/yourmoney/the-lowdown-on-sweet.html"> cancer</a>.<br><br>*Water, of course, doesn&#8217;t cause cancer. The caveat there is that it&#8217;s a good idea to drink filtered water since there could be carcinogens and other toxins in there from environmental runoff.<br><br><strong>Osteoporosis</strong><br>Osteoporosis occurs when bones lose their density.<br><br>Which one of our competitors causes osteoporosis?<br><br>Answer: Pop<br><br>(You&#8217;re starting to get the theme here, huh?)<br><br>Whether you&#8217;re drinking diet or regular, all pop contains phosphates. And while phosphates occur naturally even in whole foods, the issue here is one of volume. Too much of it results in early aging, kidney malfunction, and—yes—loss of bone density.<br><br>Water does not do any of that. Two-thirds of your body weight is water. Your bones are made of a lot of water and a little bit of other stuff.<br><br>Water wins.</p>

<div class="wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile" style="grid-template-columns:26% auto"><figure class="wp-block-media-text__media"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="300" height="300" src="https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Water-vs-Pop-The-Showdown-4.png" alt="" class="wp-image-1775 size-full" srcset="https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Water-vs-Pop-The-Showdown-4.png 300w, https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Water-vs-Pop-The-Showdown-4-150x150.png 150w, https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Water-vs-Pop-The-Showdown-4-100x100.png 100w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></figure><div class="wp-block-media-text__content">
<p><strong>Hormonal Storms</strong><br>Science is starting to come to the conclusion that a lot of our society&#8217;s health epidemics are related pretty closely to hormonal imbalance.<br><br>So, which one of our competitors here causes hormonal issues?<br><br>Answer: Pop.</p>
</div></div>

<p>Although, it&#8217;s not quite fair since it&#8217;s actually the can causing the problem and not the actual liquid, we&#8217;ll still include… our old friend BPA again!</p>

<p>Along with causing cancer, BPA also plays a role in obesity and messing up your hormones.</p>

<p>Water, again, is good. It&#8217;s nice to your hormones.</p>

<div class="wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile" style="grid-template-columns:auto 30%"><div class="wp-block-media-text__content">
<p><strong>Accelerated Aging</strong><br>No one wants to look prematurely old&#8230;<br><br>And yet: Pop again!<br><br>The anti-aging industry (creams, lotions, salves, etc.) is a $19 billion industry globally.<br><br>But, the average American alone drinks <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/06/27/americans-soda-beer_n_885340.html">44 gallons of soda per year</a>.</p>
</div><figure class="wp-block-media-text__media"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="751" height="751" src="https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Water-vs-Pop-The-Showdown-5.png" alt="" class="wp-image-1776 size-full" srcset="https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Water-vs-Pop-The-Showdown-5.png 751w, https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Water-vs-Pop-The-Showdown-5-300x300.png 300w, https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Water-vs-Pop-The-Showdown-5-150x150.png 150w, https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Water-vs-Pop-The-Showdown-5-600x600.png 600w, https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Water-vs-Pop-The-Showdown-5-100x100.png 100w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 751px) 100vw, 751px" /></figure></div>

<p>Which doesn&#8217;t make much sense simply because there are at least two ingredients in pop that studies have shown age us prematurely.<br><br>The first are the phosphates (see above).<br><br>The second is the fact that roughly <strong>77% of the corn used to make the corn syrup in pop is from GMO corn</strong>. It&#8217;s still too early to get a good handle on what GMOs are doing to us, exactly. But from what research has been done so far, it&#8217;s pretty clear that if nothing else it&#8217;s speeding up the agin process.<br><br>Water doesn&#8217;t have genes, so by definition it can&#8217;t be genetically modified.<br><br>Once again, water wins.</p>

<div class="wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile" style="grid-template-columns:31% auto"><figure class="wp-block-media-text__media"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="484" height="252" src="https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Water-vs-Pop-The-Showdown-6.png" alt="" class="wp-image-1777 size-full" srcset="https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Water-vs-Pop-The-Showdown-6.png 484w, https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Water-vs-Pop-The-Showdown-6-300x156.png 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 484px) 100vw, 484px" /></figure><div class="wp-block-media-text__content">
<p><strong>The Final Score</strong><br>So, here&#8217;s the deal. Water wins. It&#8217;s good for us, we&#8217;re made of a lot of it, we need to drink half our body weight in ounces each day. You can drink less of it if your diet is more plant-based, but if you&#8217;re eating a lot of processed foods, you need to drink even more to counteract their dryness.</p>
</div></div>

<p>But, we knew that already.<br><br>What&#8217;s baffling to me is that even though it&#8217;s widely known that pop isn&#8217;t good for us, it&#8217;s still a multi-multi billion dollar industry in this country alone.<br><br>Or, maybe it isn&#8217;t so baffling. The yearly average of marketing spend for the big soda conglomerates is $3.5 billion. We talk about kids not being able to figure out the truth behind advertising, but I&#8217;m not sure that we&#8217;re all that different.<br><br>It&#8217;s around us constantly. The messaging works.<br><br>But knowing something is bad for you and taking a step toward building better habits are two different things.<br><br>So, quit the pop. Just stop it. All of it.<br><br>It doesn&#8217;t have a Surgeon Generals warning label on the bottle, but don&#8217;t let that fool you. Pop is the new cigarette. And you owe yourself the chance at a healthy life.<br><br>Do that, and you win.</p>

<p>Sugar is addictive. Science is clear and in agreement about this.<br><br>A researcher named Dr. Serge Ahmad did an experiment a few years back where he gave mice sugar water and water with dissolved cocaine in it.<br><br>In that study, 94% of the mice continually went back for more&#8230;. of the sugar water.<br><br>You read that <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/connie-bennett/the-rats-who-preferred-su_b_712254.html">right</a>.<br><br><strong>Sugar is at least—if not more so—addictive than cocaine.</strong><br><br>And above and beyond being simply addictive, it&#8217;s also one of the main things driving the obesity, autoimmune, and heart disease epidemics currently running roughshod through our culture.<br><br>So, it&#8217;s probably pretty obvious that cutting down on our refined sugar intake—or eliminating it altogether—would be a good thing for our health.<br><br>But, that&#8217;s easier said than done. We&#8217;re addicted to it, after all.<br><br>So, here are six ways to kick sugar—and take back your health.<br><br><br><strong>PUNT ON PROCESSED FOODS</strong><br>Back in 1977, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published their “low-fat diet guidelines” and recommended it to all Americans. The <a href="https://authoritynutrition.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/low-fat-guidelines.jpg">graph</a> below shows pretty clearly that this was the EXACT MOMENT that the obesity epidemic in this country started.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="548" height="311" src="https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/6-Sweet-Ways-to-Shake-Off-Sugar-2.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-2043" srcset="https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/6-Sweet-Ways-to-Shake-Off-Sugar-2.jpg 548w, https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/6-Sweet-Ways-to-Shake-Off-Sugar-2-300x170.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 548px) 100vw, 548px" /></figure>

<p>Why?</p>

<p>Because when the food industry began to produce foods that were low in fat, the public balked because the food tasted terrible.</p>

<p>So, to make it palatable— and, oh right, profitable— they filled in the gaps where the fat used to be with two things: Salt and sugar.</p>

<p>And the epidemic started in full.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-block-embed-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">
<iframe loading="lazy" title="3 Reasons to Kick Sugar Today" width="720" height="405" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Xr-bRz0V6TQ?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen></iframe>
</div></figure>

<p><br>Which is why you should give up processed foods for good. If it comes in a bag or a box, don&#8217;t eat it. When you go to the grocery store, shop only around the <a href="https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/blog/2016/06/07/5-easy-nutritional-hacks-to-revolutionize-your-life">perimeter of the store.</a> That&#8217;s where they keep the healthy stuff.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="534" height="400" src="https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/6-Sweet-Ways-to-Shake-Off-Sugar-3.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-2045" srcset="https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/6-Sweet-Ways-to-Shake-Off-Sugar-3.jpg 534w, https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/6-Sweet-Ways-to-Shake-Off-Sugar-3-300x225.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 534px) 100vw, 534px" /></figure>

<p><strong>READ THE LABELS</strong><br>If you&#8217;re going to ignore my last point and still find yourself wandering toward the inner aisles of the grocery store, at least go in there with a little knowledge. You should at least know how to identify how much sugar is in what you&#8217;re buying. That&#8217;s what the labels are for.<br><br>So, it should be easy. Look for “sugar” in the print and then make sure there&#8217;s a only single digit before the “g” in grams. Simple, right?<br><br>Except&#8230; labels aren&#8217;t always exactly as forthcoming as we&#8217;d probably prefer.<br><br>For example: There are fifty-six names for sugar.<br><br><strong>Fifty-six.</strong><br><br>It&#8217;s nuts how far the food industry will go to hide the fact that they&#8217;ve got you addicted to sugar, and that they only make a profit by making you more and more addicted to it.<br><br>Here&#8217;s a great infographic from <a href="http://www.womenshealthmag.com/food/different-names-for-sugar">Woman&#8217;s Health</a>&#8230; use this as a guide the next time you&#8217;re looking for what to buy at the grocery store:</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="507" height="1024" src="https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/6-Sweet-Ways-to-Shake-Off-Sugar-4-507x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-2046" srcset="https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/6-Sweet-Ways-to-Shake-Off-Sugar-4-507x1024.jpg 507w, https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/6-Sweet-Ways-to-Shake-Off-Sugar-4-148x300.jpg 148w, https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/6-Sweet-Ways-to-Shake-Off-Sugar-4.jpg 591w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 507px) 100vw, 507px" /></figure>

<p>You know what liars do? They call a particular thing by different names. The list above is a way to decode those lies.</p>

<p>Because, as you learned when you were four, lying is decidedly not sweet. Not sweet at all.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1022" height="1024" src="https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/6-Sweet-Ways-to-Shake-Off-Sugar-5-1022x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-2047" srcset="https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/6-Sweet-Ways-to-Shake-Off-Sugar-5-1022x1024.jpg 1022w, https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/6-Sweet-Ways-to-Shake-Off-Sugar-5-300x300.jpg 300w, https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/6-Sweet-Ways-to-Shake-Off-Sugar-5-150x150.jpg 150w, https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/6-Sweet-Ways-to-Shake-Off-Sugar-5-768x770.jpg 768w, https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/6-Sweet-Ways-to-Shake-Off-Sugar-5-1533x1536.jpg 1533w, https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/6-Sweet-Ways-to-Shake-Off-Sugar-5-600x601.jpg 600w, https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/6-Sweet-Ways-to-Shake-Off-Sugar-5-100x100.jpg 100w, https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/6-Sweet-Ways-to-Shake-Off-Sugar-5.jpg 1916w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1022px) 100vw, 1022px" /></figure>

<p><strong>IDENTIFY YOUR TRIGGERS</strong><br>In your quest to avoid refined sugars, one of the most important things that you need to understand from the start is that certain things are going to trigger the craving.<br><br>It&#8217;s going to be different for everyone, but here are a few common triggers:<br><br>+ Coffee<br>+ Tea<br>+ Anything high in saturated fats<br>+ Dairy<br>+ Stress<br>+ Etc.<br><br>Knowing what&#8217;s going to set off your own cravings is an important step. So, identify these as early in the process as possible, and thereby set yourself up for success.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="808" src="https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/6-Sweet-Ways-to-Shake-Off-Sugar-6-1024x808.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-2048" srcset="https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/6-Sweet-Ways-to-Shake-Off-Sugar-6-1024x808.jpg 1024w, https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/6-Sweet-Ways-to-Shake-Off-Sugar-6-300x237.jpg 300w, https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/6-Sweet-Ways-to-Shake-Off-Sugar-6-768x606.jpg 768w, https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/6-Sweet-Ways-to-Shake-Off-Sugar-6-1536x1212.jpg 1536w, https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/6-Sweet-Ways-to-Shake-Off-Sugar-6-600x473.jpg 600w, https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/6-Sweet-Ways-to-Shake-Off-Sugar-6.jpg 1920w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p><strong>PRIORITIZE YOUR FRUIT</strong><br>All fruit is not created equal. Fruit contains sugar, of course, but it also contains a lot of other good stuff. And, just like with any other decision that you make in life, you need to find the right balance.<br><br>So, in deciding which fruit to eat, it&#8217;s a good idea to figure out which fruits are giving you the most good stuff—and the least bad stuff.<br><br>Here&#8217;s a great list of fruits—ranked from <a href="http://www.leanitup.com/30-healthiest-fruits-on-earth/">32 to 1</a>. It factors in calories, sugar content, fiber, antioxidants, and specific levels of vitamins and nutrients.<br><br>(Here&#8217;s the sneak peak: Blackberries, raspberries, avocados, guava, and strawberries are at the top, meaning “good”; grapes, figs, and bananas round out the bottom, meaning “not-so good.”)</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="339" height="224" src="https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/6-Sweet-Ways-to-Shake-Off-Sugar7.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-2049" srcset="https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/6-Sweet-Ways-to-Shake-Off-Sugar7.jpg 339w, https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/6-Sweet-Ways-to-Shake-Off-Sugar7-300x198.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 339px) 100vw, 339px" /></figure>

<p><strong>AVOID SUGAR SUBSTITUTES</strong><br>The main workaround the food industry has given us as consumers for avoiding the sugar that they put in everything is the introduction of “sugar substitutes.” These artificial sweeteners come to us under a variety of names: saccharine, aspartame, and sucralose, to name just a few.<br><br>While the medical community, as recently as the the mid-1990s, saw the potential for using these substitutes to get us all off sugar, the real dangers of these chemicals are now coming to light.<br><br>New evidence, for example, shows that people who frequently consume sugar substitutes may be at an increased risk of <a href="http://www.medicaldaily.com/4-dangerous-effects-artificial-sweeteners-your-health-247543">excessive weight gain, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease</a>.<br><br>Oh, and also&#8230; these chemicals are LITERALLY neurotoxins.<br><br>Which means: Artificial sweeteners are actually worse for you than sugar.<br><br>Blue? Pink? Yellow?<br><br>The color doesn&#8217;t matter. They&#8217;re all killing you at the same (rapid) rate.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="921" src="https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/6-Sweet-Ways-to-Shake-Off-Sugar-8-1024x921.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-2050" srcset="https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/6-Sweet-Ways-to-Shake-Off-Sugar-8-1024x921.jpg 1024w, https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/6-Sweet-Ways-to-Shake-Off-Sugar-8-300x270.jpg 300w, https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/6-Sweet-Ways-to-Shake-Off-Sugar-8-768x691.jpg 768w, https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/6-Sweet-Ways-to-Shake-Off-Sugar-8-600x540.jpg 600w, https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/6-Sweet-Ways-to-Shake-Off-Sugar-8.jpg 1230w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p><strong>UNDERSTAND YOUR SWEETNESS EXPERIENCE</strong><br>Your tongue experiences five specific types of taste: saltiness, bitterness, umami, sourness, and sweetness. But that doesn&#8217;t mean that all sweetness tastes the same.<br><br>It&#8217;s incredible to talk to people who&#8217;ve gotten off refined sugar entirely. They all say the exact same thing:<br><br><strong>Not only do they no longer crave sugar, they also understand “sweetness” in a different way.</strong><br><br>Compared to a Dairy Queen Ice Cream cake, a carrot isn&#8217;t all that sweet. But once you kick the sugar habit, carrots (and so many other vegetables) taste incredibly sweet.<br><br>The skinny here is that our bodies have been evolutionarily set up to want sugar. The reason for this is because our ancestors—that is, the humans who survived without getting gored by an angry pack of woolly mammoths—sought out the highest energy sources. And those were the sweetest fruits and vegetables they could find. The ones that went for the foods with lower-sugar levels didn&#8217;t have the same level of energy— and paid for it evolutionarily.<br><br>But—and this is a big but—even though our bodies need sugar to function, that doesn&#8217;t mean that we were designed to take in the levels of refined sugar that we currently do.<br><br>In 1900, for example, the average American consumed 5 pounds of sugar per year.<br><br>In 2000, that number jumped to <strong><a href="http://www.mindbodygreen.com/0-4543/14-MindBlowing-Facts-About-Sugar-Infographic.html">150.</a></strong><br><br>That has to change. We&#8217;re literally killing ourselves.<br><br>But also know this: giving up sugar doesn&#8217;t mean that you&#8217;ll be craving it all day long for the rest of your life. Instead, you&#8217;ll discover that the cravings go away after a week or two, and that the healthy foods you&#8217;ve put in as replacements will taste better than you could&#8217;ve ever imagined.<br><br>I hope you&#8217;ll take these simple ways to avoid refined sugar to heart as you look to get out of the rut of negative, destructive habits. Your future—and I&#8217;m not exaggerating this in any way—depends on it.<br><br>If you need a little guidance, or just want some company as you continue on your health journey, I invite you to join us for a <a href="https://www.wellnesstraininginstitute.com/get-started/wellness-dinner-seminar">FREE and highly informative dinner</a>.</p>
